A Luxury Tribute Portfolio Resort, by Marriott.
Translating ancient philosophy into modern luxury in the hills of North Ubud.
Suspended above a dramatic jungle canopy and iconic rice terraces, Hiliwatu draws its name from its hillside setting: hili (hill) and watu (stone). The resort’s nature-led design complements North Ubud’s lush landscape, with local timber and hand-carved stone artfully framing cascading valley views.
Balancing pristine natural seclusion with a vibrant contemporary spirit, the property anchors its guest experience in the harmony of these contrasting forces. Elemental wellness, fire-led gastronomy, and deeply cultural encounters breathe life into this guiding philosophy, creating a refined world curated for the curious traveller.
Hiliwatu Resort arrived to our desk, mid-construction with a bold architectural vision, an agreed brand agreement with Marriott for Tribute Portfolio, and no brand concept or positioning.
Our task was to build everything before opening: positioning, narrative, identity, F&B concepts, and a full guest experience strategy.
North Ubud had no shortage of beautiful resorts, but the region was lacking in properties with a comprehensive brand narrative that lived up to their architectural vision.
QUO rooted the brand in a single strategic idea: Harmony of Nature, drawn from the Balinese philosophy of Rwa Bhineda, the coexistence of opposing forces.
We positioned Hiliwatu at the intersection of the untamed and the vibrant, the two sides of Ubud that most properties treated as a choice, and defined the aspirational guest as the Curious Epicurean. Five experience pillars were developed to guide the guest journey: Roots & Rooftops, The Flow Within, Crafted Connections, Harvested Flavors, and Harmonic Wellness.
We conceived three distinct F&B concepts: Tapis, Nira, and Omber, alongside the spa concept Samya Wellness and a programming strategy for the chapel called The Pavilion. A full guest experience strategy, visual identity, CID guidelines, and operational collateral solidified the hotel’s fresh brand identity.
Hiliwatu now has a brand as considered as its architecture. With a clear positioning, a concept narrative rooted in place, and a full suite of guest experiences, F&B concepts, and visual identity to match, the property stands out as something genuinely distinct in North Ubud’s luxury market, inviting guests to find their own balance within the duality of the landscape and themselves.
With Harmony of Nature as its foundation, Hiliwatu is strategically positioned to capture the growing demand for premium, immersive hospitality in Bali.
The brand platform, experience pillars, and outlet concepts give the team the tools to deepen the story over time, through programming, community partnerships, and the kind of local rootedness that turns a well-designed resort into a destination people return to.
